(Important Update: New PGWP Rules are in Effect)
Canada has introduced significant changes to the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. As of late 2024, new requirements for language proficiency and specific fields of study are in effect. These changes are designed to align graduates’ skills with Canada’s most in-demand industries.
Navigating these new rules is crucial. The PGWP is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain Canadian work experience, and your application must be perfect. At Wellspring Immigration, we are experts on these new regulations and can guide you to a successful outcome.
Understanding the New PGWP Requirements
Beyond the standard requirement of graduating from an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI), you must now also meet specific criteria based on your program of study.
1. Language Proficiency Requirement
All PGWP applicants must now provide results from an approved language test (IELTS, CELPIP, etc.). The required score depends on your level of education:
- University Degree Graduates (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD): You must achieve a minimum of CLB 7.
- College Diploma/Certificate Graduates: You must achieve a minimum of CLB 5.
2. Eligible Field of Study Requirement
If you graduated from a non-university diploma or certificate program (e.g., from a college like SAIT or Bow Valley College), your program must be in a high-demand field. The government has identified these key sectors:
- Trades & Transport: (e.g., Carpentry, Welding, Electrician)
- Healthcare: (e.g., Dental Assistant, Pharmacy Technician)
- STEM: (e.g., Cyber Security, Software Development)
- Agriculture & Agri-food
- Child Care: (e.g., Early Childhood Education)
Crucially, graduates of university degree programs (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD) are exempt from the “eligible field of study” requirement.
